Every course in our program will give you something of value you can apply in your organization. But the Major Project Course will allow you to take on a specific major undertaking for your company – whether it’s a change initiative or a new business opportunity. You will write the business case, sell the project to senior management and develop an implementation plan. This course forces you to master your research, project management and presentation skills.

Carol Stewart

Success as a manager depends on more than acquiring technical knowledge and management concepts. Success comes from understanding organizational politics and culture and the ability to leverage the skills of others. I want students to select projects that are decision-oriented and of value to the organization and the student. In order to be successful, you will have to gain access to other parts of your company and get “buy in” at all levels.

Carol Stewart, Senior Instructor

I wanted a project that would develop my capabilities in a new area, and benefit my company. As a result of a request from my CEO, I decided to apply a Real Options analysis to one of PanCanadian’s international offshore projects. The results of the analysis not only solved the problem but made it possible to develop a very clear recommendation for senior management to act on. Real Options is a powerful tool because it provides a framework for analysis of both strategic and operational capabilities in highly uncertain situations and it facilitates decision making. I am looking forward to continuing to apply Real Options analysis to a variety of projects at PanCanadian in the future.

Award-winning projects...
For their major project, Harold Schmaltz and Barr y Heinrich (Class of ‘99), teamed up to look at whether Agricore should take an equity position in a company that had developed a new composting process. As a result, Agricore took the equity position resulting in exclusive marketing rights to a new composting product called The Real Thing. The product was a finalist in the 2000 Alberta Business of Distinction Awards sponsored by the Alberta Chamber of Commerce.
